When I was little I was not a big cartoon watcher. The only cartoon that I watched on a regular basis were The Smurfs and I was a huge fan. I had a some what large collection of the small plastic figures. Two of the firgures managed to survive and they currently live discretly in my living room. When I was little all I wanted for my smurf collection was a mushroom house. I longed for one of the mushroom houses, but I guess they were too expensive and that is why I never got one.

Several of my husbands sisters were in town this past weekend and brought no. 3 birthday presents (when all is said and done I think she will have had five birthday celebrations, oh to be young again!). Would you believe that one of the presents she got was a smurf mushroom house? Needless to say I was VERY jealous!

I got a nice early birthday surprise in the mail yesterday from Anthropologie, a 15% off my total purchase coupon. Now all I need is to get some Anthro gift cards for my birthday and I will be all set!

The party yesterday was a success. The girls all seemed to have a good time. They all colored their velvet cupcake art and made cool name bracelets. The sundae bar was a huge hit and they all seemed happy with their party favor. Most important the birthday girl had a blast at her first friend party.

No. 3 is going to be six tomorrow.

We baked chocolate chip cookies to send into school tomorrow. She is having her first friend party tomorrow at the house (seven girls from her class) and we are busy getting ready. The favors are ready to go (a note book and set of colored pencils). She want to have a sunday bar at the party, so all the topping and ice cream have been bought and I will make a chocolate sauce tomorrow. We are also going to make name bracelets at the party so the kids are busy getting all the beads ready. Now all we need to do is wait for tomorrow to come!

It is hard to believe, but no. 4 turned four today. Time sure flies.

birthday treats

My oldest is going to be nine on Sunday (the youngest will be four in a few weeks). It is crazy how fast the time has gone by. He wanted to bring in a treat to share with his class today. I told him he could pick whatever he wanted to bring in and I would make it. His choice were toffee blondies. They are popular in this house, I have been making them for years. I hope that they were a hit today.

I doubled the recipe and baked them in a 9 x 13 pan. I had to adjust the cookie time.

TOFFEE BLONDIES
Food Everyday
October 2003

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1 cup packed light-brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-2/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup toffee bits

Preheat oven to 350°. Line bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil, with a bit of an overhang on two sides. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs, vanilla, and salt. With mixer on low speed, add flour, and beat until combined. Stir in toffee bits by hand.

Spread batter in prepared pan. Bake cake until golden and a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove from oven; cool completely in pan.

Grasping foil, lift cake from pan. Peel off foil. Using a serrated knife, cut into 16 squares. Store blondies in an airtight container at room temperature up to 5 days.

When my oldest daughter was a little over three she was up late one night with us. We happened to be watching Ina on TV make a cake, a flag cake. CBJ turned to us and said that she would like the flag cake for her birthday (it was still a long time until her next birthday). Closer to her fourth birthday I asked her what cake she wanted and she remember that she wanted the flag cake. She has since requested the flag cake for three of the last four birthdays. Silly girl.

With six people in a house, it seems like there is always a birthday. Today is mine. I turn old.

I love to bake. When I am bored I bake. On Friday night I made three berry muffins for the kids to have with breakfast on Saturday. Anyway, back to the point. For my birthday my friend gave me a food theme present. Part of the present was the Sprinkles cupcake mix from Williams Sonoma. I am going to make them for the kids tonight. I think they will love them. I just hope my turn out like the picture.

It is hard to believe that Celia is five. The time is going by so fast. Spent the early morning making cupcake for her to bring into class. She pick vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting and sprinkles, every five year olds dream.
